Learn how mass timber and hybrid wood building systems can help address critical gaps in the multi-family housing market and the changes introduced in the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) that significantly expand the opportunities for tall timber structures. The presentation will review:
- Key design considerations for mass timber in multi-family projects for both mid-rise hybrid with light-frame and tall timber. Case study examples will also be presented.
- New construction types (Type IV-A, IV-B, and IV-C) in the 2021 IBC that allow for the use of mass timber or noncombustible materials in buildings up to 18 stories tall
- Methods of addressing requirements for fire resistance, including allowable building sizes, methods of demonstrating fire-resistance ratings, and allowances for exposed timber
